What is a PCP?
PCP stands for “primary care doctor” and specializes in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. In addition to providing routine medical care, your primary care doctor also helps to identify potential health problems, manage preventative screenings, and promote your overall wellness.
Having a primary care doctor you see regularly is vital to your overall health. Studies have found that adults with primary care were significantly more likely to fill more prescriptions and to have a routine preventive visit in the past year. They were also significantly more likely to receive more high-value care such as cancer screenings, including colorectal cancer screening and mammography. Through regular visits, your PCP gets to know you, your family history, and your lifestyle. You can develop a trusting relationship with your PCP that allows you to talk honestly and openly about your health concerns.
Your PCP also can connect you to highly trained medical specialists when you need advanced or specialized care. When your care includes treatment from numerous health care specialists, your PCP can ensure you receive the best possible care.
